Pitt Meadows Art Gallery Exhibition

Exhibition runs September 21 - October 27, 2024 - Memories

The Pitt Meadows Art Gallery (PMAG), located on the main floor of the South Bonson Community Centre will open on September 21, 2024 with the next exhibition titled Memories. This exhibition features the work of James Groening.

In Cree, “mihko kiskisiwin’ means “blood memory”. Elders have long said that memory is in the blood and bone, that stories are not only passed on verbally, but genetically as well. As the descendent of a residential school survivor, James Groening’s exhibition, Memories, is a testament to his ongoing pursuit to reclaiming and connecting with his identity through artistic expression. Groening’s vibrant, woodland-style art depicts stories and legends from his rich cultural heritage.

James Groening, aka Blue Sky, is a Burnaby-based Cree artist from the Kahkewistahaw First Nation. Adopted by his white grandparents during the Sixties Scoop, Groening was raised disconnected from his Kahkewistahaw roots. After meeting his family and learning of his heritage, James was inspired to pursue a journey of reclaiming his Indigeneity. Groening paints in a Woodland Art Style with expressive designs and vibrant colours, depicting stories and legends from his rich cultural heritage. Led by artistic intuition and legends, Groening’s artwork documents his journey of healing and growth, as he attempts to revitalize his cultural identity through art making and knowledge sharing.
