Air Quality of CP Rail Operations

On December 8, 2020, Council directed staff to commission an environmental study of CP Rail’s existing and proposed expansion of operations in Pitt Meadows, including the Pitt Meadows Road and Rail Improvements Project. An update on the environmental study was provided to Council on April 13, 2021.

Council authorized spending of $75,000 for an independent air quality study to determine associated health impacts of CP’s operations along the rail corridor in Pitt Meadows.

The study will assess baseline measurements of pollutants and carcinogens in relation to regulatory standards for railway operations in Canada. The City’s own consultant will compare current Federal threshold levels to the levels found in Pitt Meadows. This data will be used to advocate for higher standards and faster implementation of emission-control technologies.
