PITT MEADOWS, BC – Unfortunately, Harris Road Pool will be unable to open this Canada Day weekend due to issues with the paint in the pool basin and effects on water quality.
“Staff were advised Friday afternoon by Recreation Excellence, the pool operating contractor, to delay the opening of Harris Road Pool due to unforeseeable issues with the paint along the pool tank,” said Sam Maki, City project engineer.
“We will continue to work with our contractors to ensure the issues are resolved and get the pool opened for the season as soon as possible.”
Harris Road Pool undergoes annual maintenance each year which includes cleaning, pressure washing and painting of the pool basin. This week during preparations for opening, staff were notified of water quality issues most likely related to the paint, and despite efforts to remedy the situation the water quality has not improved. The repairs recommended by Recreation Excellence and the painting contractor will delay the opening of the pool by at least two weeks.
Swimming lessons scheduled for the beginning of July will be affected. Customers should contact Recreation Excellence for information about rescheduling of lessons or refunds by contacting jfreer@recreationexcellence.com.
“We’re sorry for the inconvenience to our pool users,” said Maki. “We will explore the option of extending the pool operations in September to make up for lost time.”
The pool has been a fixture in the community, providing swimming lessons to the community’s children for the past 73 years. It last underwent significant repairs in 2011 to address leaking water issues. At that time the pool decks were excavated, water pipes replaced and pool tank sealed. No issues have been identified in the seven years since.
Updates on a new pool opening date will be posted on the City’s website at pittmeadows.bc.ca.
