Pitt Meadows Council Adopts New Committee Structure

PITT MEADOWS, BC – Pitt Meadows Council has adopted a new committee structure following nine months of robust review and public consultation. The new structure provides an opportunity for Council to have a direct connection with their committees on a regular basis and to hear their recommendations on priority issues.

“The new structure means that Committees will have a frequent opportunities to bring priority items before Council in a more fulsome way and in a less formal and rigid Council setting,” says Mayor Dingwall. “The new structure will also promote two-way dialogue and will enable us to explore topics in more detail with both the community and committees.”

Under the previous governance structure, committees and community group associations had limited opportunities to engage with Council outside of short question and comment periods prior to and at the close of public meetings.  In the past, minutes from committee meetings were adopted in the consent agenda and may not be referred to again.

The new committee structure will mean that the flow of information to Council will be more predictable.  “Having regular information means that voices of the community will be better heard, and councillors, staff and committees will understand how concerns can get before Council,” says Chief Administrative Officer Mark Roberts. “It also allows for committee work plans to be integrated into the annual budgeting process.”

The new structure utilizes an oversight committee, yet to be named, which brings Council and the community together by facilitating two-way dialogue. “This new committee structure will form a critical part in the Council decision making, and community engagement and transparency,” says Mayor Bill Dingwall.  View the 2019 Meeting Calendar.
