Residents Asked to Honour Remembrance Day at Home

File Number
2020-47

PITT MEADOWS, BC – Due to Provincial Health Officer restrictions on gatherings, as well as instructions from our local Royal Canadian Legion, Maple Ridge Branch No. 088, residents are asked to observe Remembrance Day from the safety of their home this year.

“Although we are unable to gather in person this year to honour our veterans, we can still pause for two minutes of silence at 11 a.m. at home,” says Mayor Bill Dingwall. “It is the act of remembrance itself that is important to continue as we give thanks for the selfless sacrifices made by those in service of our country, may we never forget.”

The City of Pitt Meadows will not be hosting a public Remembrance Day ceremony on November 11 at the cenotaph. A brief outdoor ceremony will take place at another location with a few representatives from the Legion and both the City of Pitt Meadows and the City of Maple Ridge. The event will be live streamed on the City of Pitt Meadows Facebook channel on Wednesday, November 11 beginning at 10:45 a.m. Stay tuned to our social media channels for more details closer to the day.

The legion is continuing with their poppy campaign and poppies are available to purchase by donation from Pitt Meadows City Hall.

For those groups and families that have a wreath they would normally lay at the cenotaph on Remembrance Day, please visit the website for more information on dates/times to place and pick up your wreath at the cenotaph.
