Another new year brings another new first to the Pitt Meadows Art Gallery. This February we journey through the photographers lens in our in person and virtual group photography exhibition. The Art of Upcycling : Reinventing the Invented

Beauty comes in many forms. It takes a creative and innovative artist to turn an otherwise piece of junk into an artistically beautiful and sometimes even functional piece of artwork. Each piece is a remnant of its past life, often single use and a reminder of the excess waste in our everyday lives. This exhibition will open your eyes to the potential and beauty in giving things a second life.

Featuring Artists: Christy Carter, Marie Colquhoun, Annika Dixon-Reusz, Judy & Janice Jones, Joseph Karasz, Yeonmi Kim, Tannis Koskela, Aaron Moran, Yulia Shtern, Ron Simmer and Bill Thomson

Eric Hotz focus is the exploration of natural history and biophilia – his innate tendency to seek connection with nature. He explores many outlying regional parks for their lakes, streams, forests and mountains, all within a two hour drive from his Maple Ridge studio. This exhibition showcases his more recent work along with 10 new pieces which have not yet been shown to the public. 

After his first introduction to art in Kindergarten, Eric has never stopped drawing and painting. By 24 years old, he became a full time artist, first as an archaeological field artist, then as an artifact illustrator, an in-house illustrator for a local book and game publisher and in the early 1990’s as an illustrator for US-based publishers. More recently, he has been working as an art instructor teaching acrylic and watercolour painting and focusing his artwork on the local natural history from the regions near where he lives.

Our second annual Pitt Meadows Proud Exhibition features artwork inspired by the community, the natural beauty, and the vibrant people of this city. We are also showcasing a variety of mixed media from the art students at Pitt Meadows Secondary and handmade items from our very own Pitt Meadows Artisans.

Karen Goodfellow: River Bends and Totem Ends
Sept. 18 – Oct. 31

PMAG welcomes award-winning contemporary artist Karen Goodfellow’s solo exhibition ‘River Bends and Totem Ends’, a collection of mixed media sculptures and paintings. Pieces reflect the themes of the cycle of nature and wood as it relates to her mixed ancestry – colonial settler mixed with Katzie/Stó:Lō and Squamish ancestry. Currently residing in Oosyoos, Goodfellow draws inspiration from her fascination with the semi-frozen Similkameen River. Rivers, which are like veins carrying the life force, are depicted in some of her assemblages and are made by methodically building layers of various sands, pebbles, dyes, paints and inks to mimic river beds and it’s flowing configurations. Her artwork is experimental, and yet thoughtful in her methods, use of found materials and in paying homage to her heritage and the nature that surrounds her.

Karen Goodfellow has her Certificate in Fine Art from the Emily Carr University of Art & Design. Her work can be found at Nk’Mip Winery Gallery and Springbrooke Retreat Centre in Langley, BC. In 2007 she placed 2nd Place in the Peace Hills Trust National First Nations Artist contest and 3rd Place in 2011. She is currently working on publishing her first art book highlighting her pieces from 2002-2019.

ELEMENTS is a collaboration by seven textile artists exploring, translating and incorporating the building blocks of design into tangible works of art. Under the tutelage of instructor Catherine Nicholls, the Textile Group of Seven study five elements of design - line, form, shape, colour and texture. Together, the result is a dynamic collection of work which demonstrates the diversity of interpretation, vision and technique unique to each of the seven textile artists - Susan Germain, Alecia Greenfield, Trine Henricksen, Lynn Johnson, Thelma Newbury, Janis Scholey, Katie Stein Sather.

'Together We Art' is Vicuña Art Studio's first exhibition at the Pitt Meadows Art Gallery. It features paintings, drawings, illustrations and pottery works created by Vicuña Art Studio's artists who embody many talents and diverse abilities. Art is a powerful tool to bring the community together. In 2020, our world has faced heartbreaking hardships and difficult challenges. Through the virtual exhibition 'Together We Art,' the hearts of our community members can come closer together. Vicuña wishes the viewers to see the beauty in the artwork, and to find hope and discover room for positive growth as a person and as a community.

The love of the light on the land strongly influences Tammy Pilon's work to creat dramatic and colourful landscapes. Her work in acrylic captures the glow of light while her work in oils lends expressive brushstrokes to her impressionist-style landscapes. In this solo exhibition, you will recognize the many iconic landscapes of Pitt Meadows, Maple Ridge, Port Coquitlam, Coquitlam and Port Moody.

Tammy has been an art instructor for over 20 years in the Tri-City area and currently offers classes in all media at her Port Coquitlam studio.

Pitt Meadows Parks, Recreation and Culture department is pleased to feature the works of art from Pitt Meadows Secondary and Edith McDermott Elementary School at this year’s exhibit. Students discover their voices and visualize their dreams, aspirations, fears and hopes in this inspirational collection of work.

Pitt Meadows Art Gallery is excited to welcome art pieces by legendary Vancouver Canucks Goalie Richard "The King" Brodeur. Brodeur utilizes oils, acrylics, and watercolours to create abstract paintings as well as images of Canadiana landscape. His most popular series is a collection of paintings titled "My Childhood Hockey Memories" which depicts youngsters playing hockey on frozen ponds, backyard rinks, streets and back alleys all over Canada.

The Art of Upcycling  |   ‘REMAKING THE WAY WE MAKE THINGS’

Everyday objects discarded as waste are reimagined into remarkable works of contemporary art and sculpture in The Art of Upcycling at the Pitt Meadows Art Gallery. This year’s exhibit hopes to raise awareness about excess plastic waste that ends up in the oceans. Pieces include a 2D map sewn together with recycled plastics and fabrics, beautiful jewellery hand-crafted from reclaimed plastics along the Pacific Rim shores and playful sculptures created from a variety of upcycled materials.

A Love of Landscapes

Originally from Estonia, via Sweden, Enda Bardell is a Canadian Artist living and working in Vancouver. Always the explorer, Bardell’s inquisitiveness has taken her through stimulating creative careers such costume designer in the motion picture industry, fabric artist and founder of Enda B. Fashion Limited. Bardell has studied at Vancouver Art School (Emily Carr University of Art and Design), and completed studio courses and workshops with prominent Canadian artists such as Toni Onley and Joan Balzar, both of whom she considers her mentors. Her current work is primarily in watercolours. However, she also has a strong sense of hard edge abstract in acrylics. Enda Bardell has exhibited her work in numerous group and solo exhibitions locally and internationally. Two of Enda’s early abstracts from the Estonian Art in Exile exhibition are now in the permanent historic collection in KUMU, the National Museum of Art in Tallinn, Estonia.

Announcing our May exhibit, The Maple Ridge Pitt Meadows 20th Anniversary Art Studio Tour with selected works from The Art of Upcycling! 2018 will be the 20^th Annual Maple Ridge Pitt Meadows Art Studio Tour where artists from our communities open their studios to the public. With about 1500 visitors each year, its continuing success has made it an annual tradition. While the composition of the group changes from year to year, you can expect to see paintings in all media, functional pottery, ceramic sculptures, jewellery, sculpture, paper arts, functional art, mosaics, and more. There is a lot of talent in this community.
