PITT MEADOWS, BC – The City of Pitt Meadows will be allowing food trucks at two popular parks this summer under a new pilot program.
“We believe this program will enhance the recreational experience for visitors to our parks, provide more outdoor dining options and give vendors the opportunity to grow their small businesses right here in our community,” says Mayor Bill Dingwall. “Following the pilot we will be asking residents, businesses and vendors to provide feedback and if successful, we hope to expand and make the program permanent.”
The pilot program was approved by Council on Tuesday, June 22 and will allow food trucks to apply to operate three days per week (Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays), as well as statutory holidays, at two Pitt Meadows Parks: Pitt Meadows Athletic Park and Harris Road Park, during park hours (dawn to dusk). However, food truck operators can select their own hours of operations.
These two parks were chosen because they are popular destinations for both residents and visitors to the community; close proximity to major transportation routes; and distance from existing restaurants to ensure fair competition between food truck vendors and local businesses.
“The City has carefully considered food trucks, “says Chief Administrative Officer Mark Roberts. “This pilot program is an opportunity to test their operation at two high traffic locations and to evaluate the best way to allow food trucks in the community, while considering concerns about possible impacts to our existing restaurants.”
The pilot program will run from July 1 to September 30, 2021. Food truck operators who are interested in participating in the pilot program can apply through the City’s business licence application process.
Community members and stakeholders will have the opportunity to provide feedback about the program in the fall. Staff and Council will consider that information and decide whether to permit food trucks on a permanent basis and to expand to more locations.
