PITT MEADOWS, B.C. – The City of Pitt Meadows has installed two digital message signs to alert motorists when a train is actively crossing at the Harris Road rail crossing. The signs will help drivers anticipate delays and consider alternate routes before reaching the crossing.
The rail monitoring and alert system was approved through the City’s 2026 budget planning process as part of an ongoing, multi-year initiative to address traffic impacts associated with the Harris Road rail crossing.
One sign is located near the Lougheed Highway and Harris Road intersection to inform motorists travelling eastbound and southbound. The other is located just north of the Hammond Road and Harris Road intersection to inform motorists travelling northbound.
The system will undergo an initial monitoring and adjustment period. During the first several weeks of operation, the City will review performance and make adjustments as needed to support reliable sign operation and messaging.
“Providing advance notice of rail crossing activity can help reduce unnecessary queuing and give drivers the opportunity to choose another route when appropriate,” says Chief Administrative Officer Mark Roberts. “This is a practical investment that supports more predictable travel while the City continues to pursue the long-term solution our community needs.”
Motorists must continue to obey all traffic signs, signals and railway crossing controls, and never stop on railway tracks or drive around lowered crossing gates.
The City continues to advocate for grade separation at the Harris Road rail crossing as the long-term solution to improve safety, emergency access and mobility in Pitt Meadows.
