From 1920 to 1945, this property was owned by Olonzo Patten McElhinney, who likely also built this house. He was born January 13, 1880 in Halifax, Nova Scotia, pioneered on Bowen Island, and was fluent in Coast Salish, “Chinook Jargon.” Lon McElhinney cleared land and farmed wherever he went. He was also related to the pioneering Steves family in Richmond, and after he left this farm he lived at his sister’s house in Steveston. He died on December 7, 1954.
Typical of modest farm dwellings, this is a modest one-storey bungalow with a front gabled roof and full-width verandah, which has been enclosed. The house has retained its rural setting.
