Based on community and stakeholder feedback, the Environmental Inventory and Management Strategy was presented to Council on March 29, 2022. This strategy will help inform the future planning and management of our local environment and natural assets. Thank you to everyone who provided input. Final Report

Background

Located between the Fraser River, the Pitt River, and the mountains, the City of Pitt Meadows has a rich natural heritage. Environmental features include areas such as the Pitt-Addington Marsh Wildlife Area, river shorelines, and the agricultural lands. Environmental assets include the stock of physical and biological resources found in our community, such as: soil nutrients, crops, trees, drainage systems, fish, and fish habitat. These features and assets provide a range of ecosystem goods and services that enable local wildlife, farmers, businesses, and residents to thrive.

Ecosystem goods are the products from natural capital such as food, fibre, clean air, and water; ecosystem services are the less tangible but no less significant benefits from ecosystem processes such as nutrient cycling, water purification and climate regulation, and non-material benefits such as recreation, aesthetic and cultural benefits. These are being threatened; however, by invasive species, effects related to population growth, fragmented management, and climate change.

The City’s objectives for this project were to:

• Understand the current state of the City’s environmental features and assets;
• Recognize the role of agriculture in our community;
• Identify where municipal management practices could be improved; and,
• Identify short, medium, and long term strategies for greater sustainability, cultural inclusivity, and environmental responsibility.
