The Pitt Meadows RCMP

Pitt Meadows RCMP is one of the newest RCMP detachments in Canada, committed to providing the highest level of policing services to Pitt Meadows. The detachment’s members and support staff are dedicated to protecting life and property while preserving the peace.

Their mission is to enhance public safety through a comprehensive range of policing services. In addition to promptly responding to calls, the Pitt Meadows RCMP prioritizes proactive policing initiatives by collaborating with both internal and external partners to meet community needs, enhance public safety and prevent crime.

Community Policing Unit

The Community Policing Unit focuses on building partnerships between the local police force, police volunteers and the community of Pitt Meadows to educate and address the root causes of crime instead of reacting to them. A variety of programs and volunteer opportunities will be available.

The programs offered include:

• Speed and Cell Watch – A volunteer run community-based safety program designed to reduce traffic indents.
• Citizens on Patrol – A community-based prevention program where trained volunteers work with police to act as an extra set of eyes and ears by deploying to areas of the community where there is a higher potential for crimes to occur.
• Auto Crime Watch – A BC RCMP initiative aimed at reducing vehicle thefts and break-ins through volunteer patrols, educational notices and public understanding.
• Block Watch – A Crime Prevention program that involves neighbours looking out for each other’s property and reporting suspicious activity to local police. This program strives to foster a safe and more connected neighbourhood.

Traffic Complaints

Emergency traffic complaints involving collisions or personal injury should be reported to 9-1-1. For non-emergency, ongoing traffic complaints—such as speeding cars on neighbourhood streets—you can report by calling our non-emergency line: 778-670-9010. 

Please provide specific details such as:  

• The exact location
• The date and time of the incident
• The direction of travel
• The observed unsafe driving behaviour
• The vehicle licence plate number if obtainable.  

These details assist to direct the issue effectively.

Autonomous RCMP Detachment

After years of extensive review, research and consultation, the City received approval from the Province and is transitioning towards an autonomous RCMP Detachment in order to provide enhanced police visibility, public safety, service levels and responsiveness in Pitt Meadows.

The City engaged in discussions with all rights holders and partners including q̓ic̓əy̓ (Katzie) First Nation, MP Marc Dalton, MLA Lisa Beare and the Province of B.C., the RCMP and the National Police Federation (union). Discussions have been collegial and supportive—with all sharing the common goal of enhancing public safety. The City has undertaken extensive community consultation that included an online survey, Engagement and Priority Committee meetings and special Council meetings.

By creating an autonomous RCMP Detachment in Pitt Meadows, the City is confident that police services will better meet the specific safety needs and concerns of our community. The community engagement conducted and feedback that the City has received to date demonstrates that the majority of our residents support this decision, as well as q̓ic̓əy̓ (Katzie) First Nation, Ridge Meadows RCMP, the City of Maple Ridge and the National Police Federation.

Quick Facts

• Policing Services comprise of 22.7 percent or $5.58 million of the City’s operational budget.
• The autonomous RCMP detachment will operate within this existing budget and provide much better service to our unique community and better return on our investment.
• The police services building will be funded without a property tax increase and by potential grant money.
• With our own detachment, Pitt Meadows will see five dedicated members per shift (currently two) and its own dedicated Officer in Charge.
• We will still have access to the RCMP’s integrated units such as Integrated Homicide Investigation Team (IHIT), Integrated Forensic Identification Services (IFIS), Lower Mainland District Emergency Response Team (ERT), and Combined Special Enforcement Units (CFSEU), to name a few.  
• Pitt Meadows police vehicles will have updated unique call signs
