What is Water Main Flushing?

Water main flushing is a common maintenance practice the City conducts for its water utilities to maintain clean drinking water and protect the significant public investment in water infrastructure. Flushing is a method of cleaning water main pipes by sending large volumes of water through the pipes to clean out sediment and mineral build up.

What are the Benefits?

Water main flushing improves water quality, removes sediment, and prevents unwelcome tastes, ordours, and cloudiness.

When Does This Service Happen in Pitt Meadows?

The City flushes all of its water mains annually, between approximately February and November, when the weather is warm enough.

Fixing Cloudy Tap Water

When water main flushing is happening in your neighbourhood, you may notice a temporary drop in water pressure, sediment, or a discolouration in your water. The water is still safe to drink, but to correct problems with cloudy or turbid water, run the cold tap for a few minutes until the water runs clear to rid the water lines of air and sediment. If the water is still cloudy, try again in a half hour.
