What is Public Art?
Public art is defined as original artworks of permanent or temporary nature, often developed by or with direct input from an artist, placed in publicly-accessible locations for the benefit of the public. It may also include installations owned and controlled by the City on non-municipal property, where the City has entered into an agreement with the property owner for the care and maintenance of the installation.
Public art media may include, but is not limited to:
- sculpture in any material or combination of materials;
- artworks in any form including mobile, kinetic or electronic;
- murals, fiber works, glass and/or mosaic installations;
- fountains or water features;
- hard or soft landscape elements that contribute aessthetically to their surroundings;
- special decorative engineering or architectural features and elements added to such structures as: walkways, entrances, arbors and trellises, fencing, benches or platforms, windows, walls, floors or ceilings, in areas that are publicly accessible.
Public art can be found in libraries, community centres, along nature trails and in parks or shopping plazas. It can create gateways or animate streetscapes. Public art has the ability to address social issues, celebrate community or cultural identity and heritage and so much more.

Street Banner Project 2023
June 1, 2023 - As you walk and drive in Pitt Meadows you will see some new additions to public art in our community. There are new street banners from twenty local artists and photographers along Harris and Hammond Road - a total of sixty sets to enjoy around the community, and just in time for Pitt Meadows Day!

BC Hydro Box Beautification Project
The BC Hydro Box Beautification Project in Pitt Meadows adds beauty to its surroundings and celebrates local artists.
Phase One
In 2020, thirty BC Hydro boxes were completed with images from 17 local artists and photographers, as phase one of this project.

Phase Two
In the fall of 2020, the City was approved for phase two, which was an additional grant to wrap 13 more hydro boxes and TELUS sponsored two of their utility boxes on Bonson Road. A call for Katzie First Nation artists went out and the City is pleased to announce that all 15 boxes have been completed with amazing artwork and photos from six local artists.

2020 Photo Motion Contest Showcased Phase One of the Hydro Box Beautification Project
The beauty of the City was captured in an extremely creative way during the COVID-19 pandemic by Pitt Meadows artist and resident Sandie Banni. Having seen the BC Hydro Box beautification project on the City website, Sandie wanted to view the pieces in person. The beautification project involved the wrapping of each of the chosen Hydro Boxes with various artworks selected for the project. She was amazed and appreciative of the level of creativity involved in the artists designs.
Once Sandie located the boxes, she photographed the entire catalogue of completed installations. The collection of photographs were compiled into a video that was submitted in the 2020 Photo Motion contest. Typically the contest puts on approximately 33 shows at the Port Moody Inlet Theatre. Adjudication of the competition is based on originality, art, photographic skill, music and content. Due to COVID-19 restrictions, the club allowed free viewing of the submissions virtually on their webpage.
