Snow and Below-Freezing Temperatures: Operations Reminders and Preparation

Archived

As snow and below-freezing temperatures approach, we are reminding residents about the City’s snow operations and offering helpful tips for clearing snow safely.

Snow operations reminders:

  • Crews work hard to clear and salt roads on a priority basis with main routes first. Depending on conditions, it may be several days before residential streets are plowed.
  • Cul-de-sacs are challenging for the large trucks to navigate and therefore may not be plowed.
  •  See City maps that share priority routes:
  • Please stay back and give snowplows plenty of room for everyone’s safety.
  • Keep street parking to a minimum to allow plows to clear and salt roads.

Tips and preparation:

  • Residents and businesses are required to clear all public sidewalks adjacent to their property as soon as possible after a snowfall and no later than 10 a.m.
  • Remember to clear snow from walkways onto lawns, not onto the road.
  • Be a snow angel and support neighbours who may need help clearing snow.
  • Drive slowly, allow extra travel time, keep a safe distance between cars, and watch for pedestrians.
  • Dress for the weather and keep emergency supplies on hand and in your vehicle.
  • Salt has limited effectiveness when temperatures drop below -6 degrees Celsius.
    • Be cautious on roads as they will be slippery.
  • Waste collection schedules may be impacted by road conditions.
