The City of Pitt Meadows is recruiting multiple auxiliary Custodial Guards to assist in booking, guarding, maintaining, surveillance over prisoners, and attending to the welfare of occupants in the secure cells within the detachment. This is an exciting opportunity to join our new RCMP detachment and help build something great from the ground up.
Reporting to the Manager of RCMP Support Services, this position provides overall surveillance of the prisoners of the cells, ensuring they are inspected, fed, safe, and alert. They will report any unusual activity (i.e., attempts at escape or self-harm) or instances that require medical attention to a person of authority. They will be responsible for inspecting and cleaning cells before and after it is occupied; assist RCMP members with escorts and searches as requested; provide food to prisoners; and performs general housekeeping duties and required. This position exercises considerable independent judgement, while referring more complex issues to a superior who also reviews work for conformance and effectiveness. Applicants must be willing to work on-call shifts. Shifts will be scheduled between Monday to Sunday, up to 12 hours per day and up to 80 hours per week.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Completion of Grade 12 and some experience in custodial, detention or related work; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
- Sound knowledge of the policies and practices, methods and procedures involved in the control, custody, welfare and escorting of prisoners; and the ability to understand their needs while dealing with them in a firm, discreet and compassionate manner.
- Ability to maintain mental alertness, to act quickly, correctly and calmly in emergency situations and to exercise moderate physical strength and agility as the circumstances warrant.
- Ability and willingness to deal with prisoners who may be intoxicated and in unclean physical condition and to perform body searches as required; and to assist members in first aid and emergency evacuation situations.
- Valid First Aid certificate and Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation Certificate or equivalent.
- Ability to obtain and maintain an RCMP Security Clearance.
- Please note, the ability to obtain and maintain RCMP Security Clearance is required by the start date, and is a condition of employment. If you have an active clearance, please indicate your HRMIS number on your application.

- CUPE Pay Grade 14, Step 1 – $28.23 per hour (2024 rates) plus 12% in lieu of benefits and general holiday pay.
